What Life is
Set up in 1992 with Regulation (CE) N° 1973/92, adopted by the European Parliament and Council to finance projects demonstrating considerable environmental value, the Life Programme is a financial tool designed to contribute to the development of innovative techniques and methods linked to the environment, with co-financing of demonstration projects through direct contributions from the European Commission.
The Life Programme is subdivided into three sectors with different objectives but with the shared purpose of improving the environment we live in:
- LIFE NATURE
- LIFE ENVIRONMENT
- LIFE NON-COMMUNITY COUNTRIES
With view to reducing the gap between R&D results and their large scale implementation, demonstration projects are promoted which contribute to the practical carrying out of community policy as ratified by the Sixth Environment Action Programme.
In particular, LIFE ENVIRONMENT gives financial aid to actions and projects coming under the following headings:
- Territorial Planning and Valorisation
- Waterway Management
- Impact of Economic Activities
- Waste Management
- Integrated Products Policy
LIFE ENVIRONMENT Projects must be of a demonstrational, pilot or exemplary nature with regard to the techniques and methodologies employed. They must be innovative and transferable to the overall sector involved and to other industrial sectors in Europe.
